LINE WORKER / PUBLIC WORKS REPAIRER

Definition

Under direction, performs the work involved in the inspection, installation, construction, repair, rebuilding, and maintenance of electric lines and related equipment; does other related duties as required.

Under direction, performs routine work involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of street, sewer, water, sanitation, and other public facilities and may be required to operate, check, service, and make minor repairs to trucks and other maintenance/construction equipment; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Erects poles, towers, and structures.
• Climbs poles and installs electrical equipment.
• Strings wire conductors between poles.
• Pulls underground cable.
• Splices, solders, and insulates conductors and related wiring to join together sections of power line and to connect transformers and electrical accessories.
• Repairs and replaces transmission and distribution power lines between generating stations, substations, and consumers.
• Opens switches or clamps grounding device to energized equipment to deenergize electric lines or accessories.
• Climbs poles or rides in bucket attached to truck-mounted boom to remove broken or defective wires.
• Secures new wires to crossarm insulators and splices wire to adjoining sections of line to complete circuit.
• Transfers wires from defective poles to newly erected poles.
• Installs pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as crossarms, transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses, and insulators.
• Verifies that lines have been repaired by using testing instruments such as voltmeter and ammeter.
• Trims trees when necessary to perform linework.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other water service equipment.
• Removes water meters from consumers' premises.
• Dismantles, assembles, and installs water meters.
• Takes meter readings.
• Maintains and makes repairs to streets, roads, and sewers.
• Performs work involved in sweeping streets and shoveling accumulations into containers and onto trucks.
• Loads, unloads, and applies sand and street repair materials.
• Cuts brush and mows grass.
• Does cold patching of damaged streets and roads.
• Installs, paints, and maintains road and street signs.
• Operates, checks, services, and makes minor repairs to trucks, tractors, road graders, compressors, ground hogs, grass cutters, and other street and road equipment.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in installing and maintenance of power lines, equipment and structures energized at a similar voltage level as operated by the appointing authority.

One (1) year of experience in the construction, maintenance, and/or repair of streets, sewer, water, sanitation, or other public works facilities or similar heavy construction work.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

• Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical lines and equipment.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in working with electrical lines and equipment.
• Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
• Ability to care for equipment and materials.
• Ability to observe accepted safety practices in performing the work.
• Ability to make emergency repairs to electrical lines under adverse conditions.
• Ability to maintain essential records and files.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
