Definition

Under direction, cleans, services, maintains and repairs pumping station(s) plant pumps, valves, and other equipment; does other related work.

Under supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs mains, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other water service equipment; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Adjusts, regulates, and makes major and minor repairs to mechanical equipment, including the replacement of washers, gaskets, and packing.
  • Makes complex repairs to pipe lines including the replacement of valves, fittings, and pipe sections.
  • Makes general repairs to the building (s) including carpentry, replacement of broken windows, repair of concrete and other walks, and the painting of walls, window screens, and storm sashes.
  • Maintains and repairs necessary tools.
  • Stores and safeguards needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Maintains records of repairs, time, and costs.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other equipment.
  • Ensures that water taps are closed in work areas.
  • Sets drilling machines and taps water mains to the size required by placing sleeves and setting valves.
  • Disassembles fire hydrants, removes defective parts, installs new parts, and reassembles hydrants.
  • Replaces water valves.
  • Operates an air compressor and pneumatic drill.
  • Digs trenches to remove defective pipes and install new pipes and mains.
  • Yarns, pours, and caulks joints.
  • Loads and unloads pipes and fittings.
  • Obtains, safeguards, and uses needed equipment, tools, materials and supplies.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of varied experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of varied types of piping systems, motors, pumps, valves, and metering devices.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the procedures used in the maintenance and repair of pumping station equipment, pumps, valves, and machinery.
  • Knowledge of the use and safekeeping of needed tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to operate, repair, and maintain pumping station mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose motor problems and overhaul/rebuild motors.
  • Ability to change oil and lubricate motors.
  • Ability to cooperate with others.
  • Ability to keep and maintain records.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
