BEACH MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT/CHIEF LIFEGUARD

Definition

Under direction, oversees the maintenance and cleaning of beaches and the operation of a variety of special service equipment used to maintain beaches; performs other related duties as required.

Under direction, directs and oversees the life guarding operation, and supervises a group of life guarding personnel at a swimming/bathing area; provides training; does other related duties.

Examples of work

• Plans and supervises cleaning and maintenance programs for the beach area.
• Oversees the collection and removal of trash and debris.
• Oversees the maintenance and installation of beach regulation signs.
• Oversees the installation and removal of sand fences when appropriate.
• Oversees the operation and maintenance of equipment.
• Provides assignments and instruction to staff and evaluates their performance.
• Identifies materials and equipment needed to perform maintenance tasks.
• Requisitions, receives, stores and issues materials and supplies.
• Prepares and supervises the preparation of reports.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Prepares schedules to ensure that bathing areas are appropriately staffed with lifeguard personnel and equipment.
• Visits assigned stations to observe lifeguards enforcing bathing regulations.
• Coordinates with medical and law enforcement personnel at the scene of an emergency.
• Analyzes operational plans and life guarding procedures.
• Prepares reports.
• Initiates and supervises practice drills to maintain appropriate rescue skills.
• Trains staff.
• Inspects rescue equipment.
• Enforces regulations at the bathing area.
• Administers and supervises lifeguards administering first aid.
• Supervises lifeguards observing bathers on assigned sections of bathing areas.
• Supervises the rescues of bathers.
• Contacts proper authorities to report public disturbances.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• <b>REQUIREMENTS:</b>

Requirements

Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance of buildings, grounds or public recreational areas which shall have included the operation of maintenance or construction equipment, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience as a lifeguard involving rescue procedures and the administration of first aid and artificial resuscitation.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Applicants for public recreational bathing areas classified as swimming pools or lakes must possess current and valid lifeguard certification issued by the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the YMCA or other recognized organizations.

Applicants for public recreational bathing areas classified as ocean, tidal or open water must possess current and valid lifeguard certification issued by the United States Lifesaving Association (U.S.L.A.), South Jersey Chief's Association (S.J.C.A.) or other recognized organizations.

Applicants must possess current and valid standard first aid certification issued by the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council or other recognized organizations. The certification must include a minimum of 21 hours of first aid training, not including CPR training, for positions involving ocean and tidal water areas.

Applicants must possess current and valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification including adult, child and infant CPR as well as obstructed airway training issued by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council or other recognized organizations.

Applicants may be required to possess current and valid certification in water safety instruction issued by either the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the South Jersey Chief's Association or other recognized organization.

Applicants may be required to possess current and valid certification in water safety instruction issued by either the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the YMCA, the United States Lifesaving Association, the South Jersey Chief's Association or other recognized organization.

Appointees may also be required to possess current and valid AED (automatic external defibrillator) certification.

Appointees may be required to have training in supplemental oxygen support for adults, children and infants.

Appointees to positions in ocean and tidal water areas may also be required to possess basic or higher level scuba diver certification.
