Definition

Under direction performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks involved in masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, plumbing, steamfitting, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, mechanical, and/or other types of maintenance work; does related work.

Under direction, takes the lead over other lifeguards in a designated area; protects life and provides for the safety and welfare of persons in designated swimming areas; does related work.

Examples of work

• Erects simple forms, mixes cement and aggregates, pours same, and does the finishing work involved in concrete structures.
• Patches and repairs brick and concrete structures.
• Repairs damaged plastered walls and ceilings.
• Spackles, and paints interior and exterior metal, wood, and masonry surfaces.
• Repairs plumbing stoppages and repairs leaks in copper, soil, and iron pipe.
• Replaces washers and gaskets, and makes general service repairs.
• Does general sheet metal work involved in repairing roofs, drainboards, and rainspouts.
• Replaces light bulbs, fuses, wall plates, fixture cords, and switches.
• Replaces broken glass and reputties.
• Changes lubricants, refuels, and does light maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
• Cleans tools and equipment.
• Keeps simple records.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Provides assignments and instruction to subordinate lifeguards in routine activities such as lifeguarding, enforcement of rules and regulations pertaining to safety and proper use of public areas, proper use and care of rescue equipment, and proper dress.
• Sees that order and discipline are maintained in the designated area by periodically inspecting lifeguards on duty.
• Assists in dispatching men and equipment to a scene of accident or disorderly conduct by notifying and/or contacting medical personnel and/or local law enforcement personnel, in order to meet emergency situation.
• Rescues swimmers and uses life restoring techniques in order to respond to emergency situation.
• Inspects equipment and facilities such as first aid and bathroom areas to insure that they are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary condition.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in safeguarding the lives of swimmers, performing lifeguarding lifesaving techniques, and in administering first aid and artificial resuscitation

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Applicants for public recreational bathing areas classified as swimming pools or lakes must possess current and valid lifeguard certification issued by the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the YMCA or other recognized organizations.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.
• Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
• Ability to take safety precautions in performing the work.
• Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Ability to maintain simple records.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Applicants for public recreational bathing areas classified as ocean, tidal or open water must possess current and valid lifeguard certification issued by the United States Lifesaving Association (U.S.L.A), South Jersey Chief's Association (S.J.C.A) or other recognized organizations.

Applicants must possess current and valid standard first aid certification issued by the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council or other recognized organizations. For applicants to ocean and tidal water areas, certification must include a minimum of 21 hours of first aid training not including CPR training.

Applicants must possess current and valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification including adult, child and infant CPR as well as obstructed airway training issued by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council or other recognized organizations

Appointees may also be required to possess current and valid AED (automatic external defibrillator) certification.

Appointees may also be required to have training in supplemental oxygen support for adults, children and infants.

Appointees to ocean and tidal water areas may be required to possess basic or higher level scuba diver certification.
