Home Economist is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Examples of work
Plans, directs, and may take the lead over para-professionals in carrying out cost studies on a continuing basis for all items of living recognized in a public assistance level of living; studies family problems concerned with the establishment of play space; develops programs in shopping; conducts money and home management classes; prepares periodic news letters on home management and budgeting practices; sets up basic minimum cost budget standards for dependent children, the aged, and the blind; conducts studies and surveys of basic family economic problems; assists in planning and conducting staff training programs concerned with basic nutrition, shopping, and home making practices and teaches improved home making practices to home makers and youths through educational programs, demonstrations, discussions, and home visits; assists in the maintenance of essential records and files.
Education
Graduation from a four-year course at an accredited college or university with a major course of study in Home Economics.
<b>Knowledge </b>
Thorough knowledge of the problems encountered by families in low income brackets.
<b>Ability </b>
Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. Communication may include such forms as American Sign Language or braille; to analyze social and financial data concerning persons applying for assistance; to prepare suitable reports; to work harmoniously with people, and to maintain suitable records and files.
Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
