Definition

Under direction, performs the more difficult and responsible work involving the maintenance, repair, resurfacing, and/or construction of roads within a jurisdiction and/or assists in the installation and/or maintenance of traffic lines and traffic signs; does other related duties as required.

A position in this job category in a state agency or a local jurisdiction, typically designs sign layout and lettering from wood, plastic or reflective metal; draws graphic material or lettering for title, backgrounds or other layouts; operates lettering equipment and tools; sets up sign fabrication equipment; and provides technical advice to staff, peers or management.

Examples of work

Education

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of roads or streets which may include work involving the installation and maintenance of traffic lines and signs.

Two (2) years of experience in work involving sign design, layout, and lettering, or graphic arts

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

• Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.
• Knowledge of the care, maintenance, and operation of maintenance/construction equipment including cleaning, greasing, servicing, and making minor adjustments/repairs.
• Knowledge of construction/maintenance operations and procedures used in the repair and maintenance of roads.
• Knowledge of materials, equipment, and procedures used in the installation and maintenance of traffic lines and signs.
• Ability to identify problems involving operation of maintenance/construction equipment.
• Ability to organize and carry out road maintenance and repair projects.
• Ability to understand, remember, and carry ou oral/written directions.
• Ability to learn quickly from explanations and from demonstrations.
