Examples of work

• Performs the work involved in installing, removing, adjusting, testing, repairing and maintaining single phase, polyphase and primary metering time clocks, traffic lightening systems, street and area lighting systems, fire alarm and control systems.
• Investigates, analyzes and takes corrective action on customer complaints.
• Tests rubber goods, and makes high voltage tests such as oil tests, insulation tests, etc.
• Removes electric meters which require attention from consumers premises.
• Installs and sets new electric meters.
• Dismantles and assembles electric meters.
• Assists in the work involved in making replacements of damaged and/or worn parts.
• Make routine inspections.
• Checks and tests using testing apparatus.
• Checks electric meters for accuracy.
• Takes electric meter readings.
• Maintains the essential records and prepares reports of time spent, repairs made, material used, and costs.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units
• Erects poles, towers, and structures.

• Climbs poles or rides in bucket attached to truck-mounted boom to remove broken or defective wires.
• Secures new wires to crossarm insulators and splices wire to adjoining sections of line to complete circuit.
• Transfers wires from defective poles to newly erected poles.
• Installs pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as crossarms, transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses, and insulators.
• Verifies that lines have been repaired by using testing instruments such as voltmeter and ammeter.
• Trims trees when necessary to perform linework.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of motors, motor controllers, meters, cable, conduit, and transformers.

One (1) year of experience in installing and maintenance of power lines, equipment and structures energized at a similar voltage level as operated by the appointing authority.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the procedures, tools and equipment used in making electrical or mechanical repairs of varied types.
• Knowledge of advanced arithmetic and trigonometric concepts.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
• Ability to perform advanced mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, ratios, proportions, and roots.
• Ability to perform fairly uncomplicated mechanical operations and to diagnose the probable cause of defective performance of automotive devices.
• Ability to repair broken parts and to make new parts.
• Ability to keep simple records of materials used; costs, time spent, and work accomplished.
• Ability to maintain essential records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or Manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

• Under direction, performs the work involved in the inspection, installation, construction, repair, rebuilding, and maintenance of electric lines and related equipment; does other related duties as required.
• Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical lines and equipment.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in working with electrical lines and equipment.
• Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
