Definition

Under direction, performs highly responsible and complex drafting work involved in the preparation of drawings, maps, charts, graphs, sketches, and plans; does related work as required.

Under direction, performs routine, repetitive, and noncomplex field and office work involved in recording and disseminating data concerning the water distribution system; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Prepares complete sets of complex drawings which include multiple views, detail drawings, and assembly drawings, and include complex design features that require considerable drafting skill to visualize and portray.
• Uses mathematical formulas to compute weights, load capacities, dimensions, quantities of materials, and so forth..
• Working from sketches and verbal information supplied by an engineer and designer, determines the most appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments and independently resolves most of the problems encountered.
• Exercises independent judgment in selecting and interpreting data based on knowledge of the design intent.
• May provide instructions, advice, and guidance to lower level drafting technicians.
• May serve as a coordinator and planner for large and complex drafting projects.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units
• Performs fire flow tests using portable pressure gauges to measure water flow at a given point.
• Locates curb stop boxes, using an electronic or magnetic device, that provide access to the water valve to the customer's home and line valve roadway boxes that provide access to water main control valves.
• Locates customer service lines and water mains, using an electronic pipe locating device.
• Operates curb stop valves and line valves.
• Measures in the field the locations of valves and other water system appurtenances, and plots and inks additions and corrections to water distribution system maps.
• Determines the presence and location of leaks, using a mechanical or electronic device.
• Performs routine drafting and tracing work relating to the distribution system such as plotting detailed sheets showing size and location of valves and hydrants to be installed.
• Prepares sketches of areas subject to street openings for repair work by public and private agencies indicative of the location of water fixtures.
• Acts as liaison with contractors during installation of water main extensions by verifying exact location of installation and advising on needed materials such as length of pipe and type of valves and fittings.
• Coordinates in the field water system shutdowns between maintenance crews and private contractors, and determines what valves must be closed so as to cause minimum disturbance to water users.
• Determines, exercising independent judgment, whether valve can be closed and reopened without breaking and what fire hydrants should be opened to most efficiently flush the system.
• Performs mathematical computations to determine volume of water flow involving a mathematical formula based on pipe diameter and water velocity.
• Maintains records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording sand information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of drafting experience.

One (1) year of experience in the installation and/or repair of water mains, hydrants, valves, or other water service equipment and/or in the operation of water treatment plant apparatus.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform in essential duties of the position.

Appointee may be required to possess a valid Public Water Distribution License issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of drafting techniques and instruments used in preparing detailed sketches, drawings, charts, and plans.
• Knowledge of procedures for reducing, enlarging, tracing, lettering, and filing of maps, drawings, charts, sketches, graphs, and plans.
• Knowledge of symbols and terminology used in drafting work.
• Ability to analyze routine drafting problems.
• Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
• Ability to learn quickly from written and oral explanations and from demonstrations.
• Ability to prepare engineering and/or architectural drawings that are neat, accurate, and logically arranged, utilizing the methods and techniques of drafting.
• Ability to make mathematical computations using standard tables and formulas.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
