Where this title is used

Security Systems Operator is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under the direction of a Supervising Security Systems Operator, performs various tasks involving the operation of closed circuit security cameras and/or other security system equipment; Using numerous controls, recorders, television monitors and/or other security equipment, monitors an assigned area of duty from a work station; recognizes and responds to emergency, criminal and/or disorderly activities and may make recordings of these events; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

Monitors an assigned area of duty from a work station using video or surveillance equipment.

Notes and reports conditions which constitute a danger and/or hazard and takes the appropriate action to report such events to the supervisor and/or police department.

Requests emergency police, fire and medical units to areas where needed.

Assists law enforcement by viewing locations where police units are dispatched to ascertain if there are any dangers present before the police units arrive.

Keeps all viewed events confidential unless instructed otherwise by a supervisor or administrator.

Appears and testifies in court as required.

Familiarizes self with assigned area of duty.

Uses desktop computers to enter required reports.

Uses security equipment, materials, and supplies properly to prevent damage to said equipment.

May operate closed circuit television (CCTV) security cameras and other related security equipment.

Checks security equipment at beginning and end of shift to ensure the equipment is in working order.

Prepares simple, clear, accurate, informative and legible reports.

In a CCTV security unit, obtains images (close-ups) of individuals and vehicles involved in emergency and law enforcement related incidents using the pan, tilt and zoom abilities of the security cameras.

In a CCTV security unit, makes copies of images to CD/DVD/VHS or makes still prints as needed or required by police, prosecutor, or city law department.

In a CCTV security unit, sends images to the police Central Communications Bureau as required or directed by his/her supervisor.

In a CCTV security unit, becomes familiar with system components and terminology.

In a CCTV security unit, limits CTV Control Room access to authorized individuals.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

<b>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS</b>:

Appointees may be required to complete a training course that covers the security equipment they will be responsible for operating. In addition, the appointee will be trained on how to recognize and react to various types of situations.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of security monitoring procedures and techniques after a period of training.

Ability to recognize emergency situations, criminal activity, disorderly or abnormal behavior and respond/react accordingly.

Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of information obtained.

Ability to read and discern visual images on a television monitor.

Ability to testify accurately in a court of law.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and others involved in the work of the unit.

In a CCTV unit, ability to learn to operate and maintain security camera equipment.

In a CCTV unit, ability to learn to send images to the Police Department's Central Communications Bureau.

In a CCTV unit, ability to learn to use the recorders copy function to make VHS tapes and CD/DVD disks.

Ability to prepare accurate and factual reports.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
