Where this title is used

Emergency Medical Technician Trainee is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under close supervision, receives on-the-job training in the administration of emergency medical care, treatment, and transportation prior to arrival at a hospital; assists certified EMTs and Paramedics in providing emergency medical care at the scene and during transit to the hospital; performs other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Under close supervision, as a trainee and productive worker:
  • Observes and assists certified EMTs and Paramedics during emergency Situations.
  • Learns how to respond to emergency calls for medical treatment.
  • Learns how to drive an ambulance to required locations, park an ambulance in a safe location, and create a safe traffic environment.
  • Learns how to determine the nature and extent of injuries or illness.
  • Learns how to prioritize emergency care based on injuries presented.
  • Learns how to administer emergency care such as opening and maintaining an airway, giving positive pressure ventilation, and cardio-resuscitation.
  • Learns how to utilize necessary medical equipment to treat patients and ascertain the extent of their injuries or illness.
  • Learns to search for medical identification emblems as clues for providing emergency care.
  • Learns how to extricate patients from entrapment.
  • Learns how to prepare victims for transportation in an ambulance.
  • Learns how to care for patients on trips to a hospital.
  • Learns to report the nature and extent of injuries to a dispatcher to ensure prompt medical care upon arrival.
  • Learns how to transfer patients to stretchers and carry or wheel patients into hospitals.
  • Learns to provide nurses and/or doctors with evaluations of a patient's condition.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to learn the principles of emergency medical and first aid treatment.
  • Ability to learn the techniques that are used to administer pulmonary and cardiac resuscitation.
  • Ability to learn and perform appropriate emergency treatment depending on a patient's condition.
  • Ability to learn how to drive an ambulance with caution.
  • Ability to learn how to administer first aid, CPR, and other emergency medical care.
  • Ability to learn how to prioritize emergency medical treatment needs.
  • Ability to calm and reassure patients who are confused, frightened, or in distress.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations.
  • Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

  • <b>ADVANCEMENT:</b>
  • Appointees who successfully complete the twelve (12) month training period will be eligible for advancement to the Emergency Medical Technician () title in accordance with New Jersey Civil Service procedures.
  • The inability of an employee in this trainee title to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to Emergency Medical Technician, or failure to obtain the required certifications during the training period, shall be considered a cause for separation.

CERTIFICATION

Appointees must successfully complete training and obtain valid certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) issued by the New Jersey Department of Health within the training period.

Appointees must obtain valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification within the training period.
