Definition
Under direction, weighs any vehicle commodity, produce, article, or material and issues a certificate of weight and affixes a seal attesting to the accurate weight of such vehicle, commodity, produce, article, or material; does other related duties.
Examples of work
Operates scale equipment by entering data into computerized scale or by reading or recording printed weights or manually subtracting tare weight from gross weight to obtain accurate load weights. Reads rate charts to determine correct fee for load type and makes notation of fee. May record information such as the weight of incoming and outgoing vehicles, failure to comply with facilities requirements, and other similar operational information. Accepts fees, gives change, and issues receipts. Totals monies received and verifies total with cash on hand. Directs users to designated area for unloading. Explains various procedures and requirements of facility and government regulations regarding load types, weights, billing procedures, and so forth. Maintains current information on rates, fees, bulk materials, and/or refers questions to supervisor. May estimate size of load on truck using cubic yard measurements. Verifies certain data to ensure use of facility by authorized individuals, that proper fees have been paid, or that appropriate accounts have been charged the weighing fee. Is responsible for the accuracy of all weighings. Ensures that scales used are in perfect balance for all weighings, are kept in good condition, and makes minor adjustments. Affixes signature and official seal to certificate of weight after weighing has been completed and the results entered on the certificate. Ascertains the gross, tare, and net weights of all commodities weighed for which a certificate of weight is issued. Maintains accurate records of all certified weighings. Sees that scales and other weighing equipment are protected against tampering and vandalism. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Requirements
CERTIFICATE Applicants must possess a current and valid certificate as a weighmaster issued by the New Jersey State Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Consumer Affairs, Office of the Superintendent of Weights and Measures.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of New Jersey law, rules, and regulations dealing with the weighing of various commodities, produce, articles, materials, or vehicles. Knowledge of the procedures for keeping records of cash receipts. Knowledge of the preparation of accurate and informative reports. Ability to learn the methods and procedures used in determining and documenting weights, fee rates, and categories of bulk material. Ability to estimate truck loads or to read scale weights. Ability to perform arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication) with a minimum of error to calculate correct weights, measures, costs, and so forth. Ability to operate a scale used for weighing motor vehicles, read indicators, and record weights accurately. Ability to learn the various facility procedures, requirements, and government regulations and to explain them to others. Ability to visually detect discrepancies in user identification or noncompliance with regulations. Ability to carry out oral and written directions. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in hot or cold weather. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
