Mosquito Identification Specialist Trainee is a local service title. Definition
Under the close supervision of a Mosquito Identification Specialist 3 or other supervisory official, as a trainee and productive worker, learns to identify species of mosquitoes; learns to tabulate, summarize, and plot results of identification and numbers for use in directing control activities; may assist with mosquito extermination and control work; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Under close supervision, as a trainee and productive worker: Learns to sort light trap collections and separates mosquitoes according to species and genus using a microscope and mosquito key. Learns to prepare records of counts and species for use in mosquito control. Learns to prepare analysis of findings and may send copies to the appropriate State and county agencies. Learns to prepare maps indicating trap collections and breeding areas. Learns maintenance and repair of surveillance traps. Learns to prepare charts or tables comparing findings in the area with surveillance findings in surrounding counties and with previous year's records. May inspect and evaluate breeding areas. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees may be required to obtain a valid license as a Commercial Pesticide Applicator of the appropriate class, issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection within the trainee period. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Ability to understand information about insects, mosquitos specifically, including basic physical characteristics in various stages of development, habits, living or breeding patterns, and their breeding areas. Ability to perform tasks independently or as a member of a group. Ability to perform varied types of mosquito control surveillance related tasks for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions. Ability to follow prescribed instructions. Ability to follow instructions on work methods and techniques. Ability to learn how to use the tools and equipment required to perform routine tasks. Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible if they can perform essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible. ADVANCEMENT: Appointees who successfully complete the twelve (12) month training period will be eligible for advancement to the Mosquito Identification Specialist 1 () title in accordance with the New Jersey Civil Service Commission procedures. The inability of an employee in this trainee title to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to Mosquito Identification Specialist 1 () shall be considered as cause for separation.
