Definition
Under direction of a supervisor in a cemetery, takes the lead in the care and maintenance operations of the cemetery; performs the more specialized cemetery maintenance work which may involve the operation of mechanical equipment; does related work as required.

Organizes the grounds maintenance work and develops effective work measures, programs, schedules, and procedures. Takes the lead in the care and maintenance of cemetery plots to include preparations for interments, grave markers, flag ceremonies, and floral pieces. Ensures that all sunken graves are properly refilled and reseeded. that they are properly maintained. Takes the lead in carrying and lowering caskets from the transporter to the gravesite; may drive the cemetery casket transporter, dump truck, and tractors, as required. Acts as flagman for the backhoe operator during interments. Takes the lead in preparing and staking out new quadrants for future interments. Takes the lead in assembling, placement, and setting of grave markers in accordance with cemetery procedures. Services, operates, and provides preventive maintenance to riding lawnmowers, weed wackers, rototillers, back pack blowers, and other cemetery maintenance equipment. Ensures the proper storage, use, and organization of cemetery equipment, materials, and supplies. Takes the lead in the cleaning and maintenance of all public access areas to include walkways, paths, benches, gateways, and parking areas. Takes the lead in erecting water sprinkler systems and determines which areas need irrigation. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in a cemetery operation including interment services, care, and maintenance of a large scale grounds work, gardening, and tree care operation.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the principles of grounds maintenance. Knowledge of the proper procedure for performing interments. Knowledge of the proper use of hand and power tools. Ability to assign and instruct cemetery maintenance employees and evaluate their work performance. Ability to assist families and general public to find specific sites in a manner befitting the circumstances. Ability to safely operate trucks, riding mowers, cemetery casket transporter, and tractors. Ability to take the lead in the propagation of trees, shrubbery, and perennial plants, cultivation of flower beds, lawn maintenance, and pruning/trimming operations. Ability to load and unload material and supplies. Ability to shovel snow, dirt, and dig graves. Ability to supervise the use and general maintenance of available equipment, materials, tools, and supplies, and to train employees/inmates in their proper handling. Ability to requisition, safeguard, store, and record the needed equipment, tools, materials, and supplies. concerning groundskeeping and progress containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
