Definition
Under supervision of a supervisory officer in an institution or agency, provides vocational training to employees, inmates and/or residents in general maintenance which may include painting, roofing, fencing, carpentry, grading and other general maintenance; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Assists in planning the work of the assigned area and monitors work progress.
- Instructs employees, inmates, and/or residents in the use of painting, carpentry, masonry, roofing, jack hammers, and other maintenance tools.
- Trains in proper paint application and tinting techniques.
- Trains in proper use of ladders and other rigging equipment.
- May develop lesson plans and evaluate progress.
- Enforces the use of applicable safety devices and methods.
- Oversees the care, custody, security, and safety of inmates or workers in accordance with institutional policy.
- Instructs employees, inmates, and/or residents to properly use and maintain equipment.
- Requisitions materials; maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Maintains records of employees, inmates and/or residents progress, supplies, and of equipment, and production.
- May assign work of assistant instructors.
- Prepares reports.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of general experience as a painter, carpenter, mason, plumber, or roofer.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the methods used in general maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of the safety precautions to be taken in general maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of general maintenance tools.
- Ability to determine materials necessary to complete general maintenance tasks.
- Ability to provide vocational instruction in various areas of general maintenance.
- Ability to requisition and maintain an inventory of materials.
- Ability to oversee the custody, security of safety of inmates, patients or clients.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
