ALTERNATE MEMBER ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
Zoning boards of adjustment hear variance applications and appeals from zoning decisions. Alternates sit when a regular member is absent or recused, which on a contested application is often enough to matter.
Members and alternates are appointed by the governing body and, in most municipalities, serve unpaid. It is a civic appointment rather than employment, so there is no examination and no specification.

Alternate Member Zoning Board of Adjustment is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.
