Definition
Under the general supervision of the Director, Readjustment Unit and/or Supervisor of Resident Living Programs, is responsible for assigning and supervising Instructor-Counselors in the daily program operations during an assigned shift. When so assigned, may also work as supervisor of staff responsible for maintaining Care and Socialization, accountability, safety and security of the Unit during his assigned shift.
Examples of work
Assigns staff under supervision to specific habilitation and recreation activities as previously developed with a supervisor. May cancel and/or change activities and assignments as conditions warrant. Maintains a shift log, reporting to a supervisor the programs carried out and problems encountered. Makes recommendations on program changes and additions to better meet the needs of residents and assists in developing, scheduling and implementing such programs. When assigned, is responsible for assigning staff to maintain appropriate order and discipline to insure the safety, welfare and security of residents of the Unit. When assigned, is responsible for institutional communications when operators are not on duty. Will also serve as Unit Officer of the Day when administrative offices are closed and Acting Director of the Unit when so designated. Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees. Assists in coordination and recommending of In-Service Training for staff. May do such other related duties assigned along with other staff, for the benefit of the residents and/or the institution.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of counseling program requirements and ability to select and assign staff according to skills to insure adequate delivery of services to residents Ability to maintain adequate records and communicate with supervisory staff to resolve problems of program services. Ability to evaluate resident and program needs and make appropriate recommendations within available resources. Ability to provide Care and Socialization experiences to meet the safety and welfare and needs of residents and staff. Ability to learn the operations necessary to maintain the institutional communications systems. Ability to remain current in the literature on habilitation, care and to organize and conduct training in these functions for other staff. Ability to maintain concise, factual and accurate records and submit written reports as required or requested. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Six (6) years of professional experience in counseling, teaching, and/or guidance in an organized education program. OR Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a Master's degree in Psychology, Education, Guidance, and/or Counseling; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
