Investigates deaths that are sudden, violent, or otherwise unexplained, and determines cause and manner. The findings carry weight in criminal cases, insurance and public health surveillance alike.
The examiner must be a licensed physician, and New Jersey expects forensic pathology qualification for the role. Appointment is made by the county under the State Medical Examiner system.
