Definition
Under direction, maintains and repairs instrument metering and relay systems, makes layouts, installs and tests all types of single phase, polyphase, and primary meter installations: does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Installs, maintains, repairs, adjusts, sets, inspects, calibrates and tests meters, instruments and relays of the electric utility.
- Takes the lead in the maintenance and repair of wholesale, substation and interchange metering.
- Replaces damaged or worn components.
- Installs and sets new electric meters.
- Removes electric meters from consumer property.
- Tests rubber goods and performs high voltage tests such as oil tests and insulation tests as required on any material or equipment.
- Installs, maintains and repairs street and area lighting, traffic lighting, and fire alarm systems.
- Performs inspections.
- Makes investigations to locate defective electrical operations and takes proper corrective action.
- Obtains, stores, safeguards and uses needed equipment, materials and supplies.
- Prepares clear, sound, accurate and informative reports.
- Maintains essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Requirements
<b>TRAINING</b>
Satisfactory completion of a training program in electric power plant operation.
Experience
Four (4) years of experience in the instillation, testing, programming, repair and maintenance of low, medium and high voltage meters, meter instillations, meter wiring, instrument transformers, conduit, enclosures and appurtenances.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver' license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of metering, relaying and instrument systems.
- Knowledge of methods and procedures of installing, calibrating, testing and repairing meter instruments and control systems.
- Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of wholesale, substation and interchange metering.
- Knowledge of advanced arithmetic and trigonometric concepts as they apply to Electric Metering.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to take the lead in the maintenance and repair of wholesale, substation and interchange metering.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, use and repair needed equipment, tools, materials and supplies.
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports.
- Ability to perform advanced mathematical functions as they apply to Electric Metering.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
