Definition
Under supervision in a narcotics clinic, assists professional rehabilitation workers in establishing a dialogue with patients and in encouraging them to abstain from using narcotics; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Interviews patients and attempts to gain their confidence by utilizing insight gained through experience with problems facing drugs addicts.
- Encourages subjects to cooperate with the professionals offering psychological and social guidance at the clinic.
- Acquaints patients with the resources available to aid them towards rehabilitation.
- Conducts patient educational seminars and community meetings as specified.
- May assist professional workers by inducing patients to discuss their problems and by encouraging their abstinence from narcotics.
- Transports patients to and from outside scheduled appointments.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in a residential or outpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of problems faced by the narcotic addict.
- Knowledge of the jargon used by the narcotic addict.
- Knowledge of behavior modification techniques.
- Ability to meet and deal with narcotic patients and their relatives.
- Ability to possess sympathetic understanding of the condition and problems of the patient. Ability to work harmoniously with people.
- Ability to maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
