Nurse's Aide is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under the direction of a nurse or other supervisory staff member in a long tern care facility (nursing home), performs the non- professional nursing duties involved in the routine care of hospitalized patients; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Bathes and/or assists patients with bathing, dressing, and changing.
- Performs or assists the patient with personal hygiene practices such as shaving, grooming of hair and nails, dental care, etc.
- Feeds or assists the patient with meals.
- Assists the nursing staff in providing basic treatments; changes dressings.
- Assists in checking or checks and records vital signs such as temperature, pulse and respiration; measures weight of ambulatory patients.
- Washes equipment utilized for patient care.
- Collects disposable supplies and equipment utilized in patient care; discards according to established health and safety procedures.
- Collects, bags and sends out soiled linen for washing; receives and stores clean personal clothing items.
- Conducts routine checks of patients; notifies nursing staff when sudden changes occur in a patient's condition.
- Lifts, moves and transports patients as required.
- Prepares patients for special tasks or other medical procedures as required.
- Maintain basic records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
License
In accordance with N.J.A.C. 8:39-43.2, appointees are required to possess a valid New Jersey Nurse's Aide Certification, issued by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services within four (4) months of the date of initial appointment.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems encountered in the physical care of persons confined to a nursing home.
- Knowledge of the health and safety procedures utilized to collect and discard disposable supplies.
- Ability to perform basic, non-professional nursing care services.
- Ability to check vital signs.
- Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to bathe, dress and change patients, and to assist with personal hygiene practices.
- Ability to properly feed dependent patients.
- Ability to recognize and report sudden changes in a patient's condition.
- Ability to discard disposable supplies in accordance with health and safety procedures.
- Ability to lift, move, and transport patients.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
- Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.

This certification process requires completion of a ninety (90) hour training course for Nurse's Aide in long term care facilities. Candidate must also successfully pass a competency evaluation program, consisting of skills and a written/oral examination, prior to certification as a Nurse's Aide in a long term care facility.
The inability of an employee to obtain the above certification within four (4) months of the date of initial appointment may be considered as cause for separation.
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
