Definition
Under direction, performs general plumbing and steamfitting work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing facilities and systems, high pressure steam pipes and fittings, pumps, boilers and furnaces, steam heating auxiliary equipment and steam operated equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the trade; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with the plumbing code or accepted trade practices; may be called on to do routine welding; takes the lead over and gives suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Installs, repairs, and/or maintains water, gas, oil waste disposal, and high pressure steam pipes and facilities.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains furnaces and boilers, steamtables, autoclaves, and similar equipment.
- Troubleshoots malfunctions and makes emergency and permanent repairs.
- Removes stoppages from piping and toilet, sink, and other facilities.
- Works with wrought iron, cast iron, butt welded, soil asbestos composition, and copper pipe.
- Installs and repairs piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell and spigot, compression, and soldered joints.
- May cover piping, joints, and fittings with asbestos or other compositions.
- Is familiar with the nomenclature, use, and installation of reducing pressure relief, surge, check, float, gate, globe, and thermostatically controlled valves, unions, sleeves, bushings, reducers, steam traps, dirt strainers, and other fittings and valves.
- Installs and maintains mains, risers, headers, radiators, and appropriate auxiliary equipment for a heating system.
- Installs, services, and repairs pumps.
- May do routine electric or acetylene welding.
- Is responsible for measuring and fitting of piping and facilities.
- Interprets data from stationary fireman's or engineer's log.
- Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, specifications, and roughing-in sheets in accord with the plumbing code or approved trade practices.
- Interprets graphic symbols used on piping drawings.
- Makes time and material estimates.
- Inspects and makes tests on work in progress and completed work.
- Gives suitable assignments to helpers.
- Keeps essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in plumbing and steamfitting work involving a variety of layout, installation, and maintenance tasks.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems involved in plumbing and steamfitting work.
- Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions and of keeping necessary records.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to take safety precautions in performing the work.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to give suitable assignments and to establish and maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
