Definition
Under direction, plans, organizes, coordinates, develops, and implements programs on aging and/or disability, coordinates community resources and services addressing the needs of older persons and/or persons living with disabilities, and their caregivers; maintains liaison with state and local agencies and concerned organizations; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Provides leadership, guidance, and administrative direction in the development and implementation of an information and referral service on community resources pertaining to aging and/or disability, and caregiving. Consults with, advises, and otherwise provides administrative assistance to community organizations, associations, and groups seeking to increase understanding of issues associated with aging and/or disability, and caregiving. Maintains up-to-date inventory of resources and services available to older persons and/or persons living with disabilities, and their caregivers. Assesses existing programs and identifies gaps in services; identifies alternatives and recommends solutions to the persistent issues related to aging and/or disability, and caregiving. Plans and develops an education/public information program to increase knowledge and understanding of aging and/or disability, and caregiving. Gathers and disseminates information on subjects related to aging and/or disability, and caregiving. Gives presentation before various civic and community organizations on subjects related to aging and/or disability, and caregiving. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of programs addressing the issues associated with aging and/or disability, and caregiving. Knowledge of programs available for older persons and/or persons living with disabilities, and their caregivers. Knowledge of the issues associated with aging and/or disability and caregiving. Knowledge of community agencies/resources available to older persons and/or persons living with disabilities, and their caregivers; and of the methods for utilizing such resources. Ability to work with public/private agencies involved in community program development for older persons and/or persons living with disabilities, and their caregivers. Ability to work with older individuals and/or individuals living with disabilities, and their caregivers, to apprise them of available programs. Ability to respond to the needs of caregivers of older persons and/or persons living with disabilities. Ability to coordinate programs that identify trends and encourage cooperative interchange to resolve issues associated with aging, disability, and caregiving. Ability to coordinate efforts of various individuals and groups. Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Seven (7) years of professional experience in work involving counseling or assisting senior citizens or persons with disabilities with matters involving their welfare. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a master's degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or Counseling and Guidance and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
