Definition
Under direction, supervises the work involved in providing psychiatric and social services for clients; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises the work involved in organizing tasks concerned with social problems of clients.
- Gives suitable assignments and instructions to psychiatric social workers and other assigned employees.
- Participates in professional and related meetings and conferences.
- Confers with psychiatrists and other professional personnel relevant to clients, their families, and other concerned persons and obtains significant social and other data for diagnosis and treatment.
- Supervises the work involved in providing social services to clients who need help in making satisfactory adjustments.
- Formulates psychosocial diagnosis.
- Performs the more responsible work involved in analyzing and evaluating social data bearing on emotional problems.
- Participates in group programs.
- Prepares reports.
- Supervises the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited school of social work with a Master's degree in Social Work.
Experience
Four (4) years of experience in psychiatric social work of which one (1) year shall have been in a supervisory capacity over professional subordinates.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of approved psychiatric social work practices.
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques of supervision.
- Ability to plan and carry out individual programs and supervision of psychiatric social work for clients.
- Ability to give suitable assignments and instruction to assigned employees.
- Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with professional and other personnel.
- Ability to prepare written and oral reports.
- Ability to supervise the maintenance of essential records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
