Definition
Under direction, provides nursing consultation and educational services in the development, administration, and supervision of a public health nursing program; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Organizes assigned field and office work and develops effective work methods.
- Provides advisory and consultative services to public health nurses and other individuals and groups interested in the work of the unit.
- Assists in coordinating the public health nursing program with other activities of the health unit and with other health, welfare, and social agencies.
- Studies and evaluates public health problems and provides advice and assistance to the employees concerned.
- Prepares tentative plans for meeting recognized nursing needs.
- Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with community groups and agencies engaged in health, welfare, and educational activities.
- Explains and interprets the public health nursing program of the unit to lay and professional groups and participates in health education activities.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining consultation stations and clinics.
- Assists in developing standards, policies, and procedures relating to public health nursing functions.
- Prepares correspondence.
- Prepares statistical and other reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Establishes and maintains essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing supplemented by a Master's degree in Nursing or Public Health from an accredited college or university.
Experience
Five (5) years of experience in Public Health Nursing in a public health agency in which community health is emphasized of which two (2) years shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License
Appointees must possess current and valid registration as a professional nurse in the State of New Jersey.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of public health nursing.
- Knowledge of organization, administration, objectives, and scope of a public health nursing program with other activities of the unit and with those of other welfare and social agencies.
- Knowledge of methods of giving advisory and consultative services in a public health nursing program.
- Knowledge of standards used in evaluating Public Health Nursing Services.
- Knowledge of methods most effective in conducting meeting and conferences.
- Knowledge of methods of preparing clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to analyze and interpret the public health nursing program.
- Ability to organize assigned advisory and consultative work and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to work harmoniously with associates, health officials, and members of lay and professional organizations.
- Ability to integrate the public health nursing program with other activities of the unit.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with other community organizations.

- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
