Where this title is used

Radio Repairer is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under direction, does the work involved in the maintenance and repair of radios; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Maintains fixed and mobile shortwave radios to ensure operation in accord with the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Removes sets and equipment which are not operating properly.
  • Installs new and repaired equipment.
  • Troubleshoots radio problems and takes the necessary steps to correct them.
  • Tests varied parts of radios using testing equipment.
  • Replaces parts which will not operate properly.
  • Tears radios down and reassembles them using new and reconditioned parts.
  • Cooperates with local, state, and national authorities and operators in coordinating the network.
  • Monitors the network to ensure that sets are operating on the same band and operating properly.
  • Obtains, stores, records, safeguards, and properly uses radio equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Keeps the radio shop in a clean, neat, and orderly condition.
  • Prepares clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports.
  • Maintains essential records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mobile and fixed radio equipment including experience with frequency modulated equipment.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, standards, principles, policies, and procedures of the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of radios.
  • Knowledge of audio frequency, radio frequency, and frequency modulation, and their characteristics and limitations.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the types of shortwave sets.
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of tools and equipment used in testing radios and parts of the radios.
  • Knowledge of methods used in keeping the radio shop in a clean, neat, and orderly condition.
  • Ability to maintain fixed mobile shortwave radios installed in automobiles and offices to ensure operation in accord with the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Ability to remove sets and equipment which are not operating properly.
  • Ability to install new and repaired equipment.
  • Ability to analyze radio troubles and take steps to correct them.
  • Ability to test varied parts of radios using testing equipment and replace parts which will not operate properly.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Applicant may be required to possess either an FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License, a NABER Certified Technician certificate, or an APCO Certified Technician certificate.
