Definition

Under direction plans, develops, and promotes a community recreational program of swimming and water safety activities and supervises and trains the recreation leaders involved in the program; does related work.

Examples of work

Plans, develops, and promotes a community-wide program of swimming activities for recreation and water safety. Supervises, trains, evaluates, and advises assigned employees and volunteers. Operates and maintains both indoor and outdoor swimming facilities. Organizes and participates in promotional activities created to develop the public's interest in the swimming program. Arranges for and directs swimming meets and other special water activity events. Tests and/or verifies the qualifications of lifeguards and swimming instructors. Coordinates the swimming and water safety programs with other recreation services offered in the area. Prepares reports and press releases. Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to enlist the interest of concerned people and encourage their participation in an organized swimming program. Ability to establish and maintain helpful and cooperative relationships with associates and the public. Ability to prepare clear, concise, accurate, and informative reports and press releases. Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Six (6) years of professional experience in recreation work involving the planning, promoting, development, and taking lead of a recreation program involving swimming and water safety. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a Master's degree in recreation or in parks and recreation management from an accredited college or university; and one(1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions. An applicant may be required to possess a valid certificate as a Recreation Supervisor issued by the New Jersey Board of Recreation Examiners. Applicants may be required to possess current and valid lifeguard certification issued by the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the YMCA, the United States Life Saving Association, the South Jersey Chief's Association or other recognized organizations depending on location of employment. Applicants may be required to possess current and valid standard first aid certification issued by the Red Cross, the National Safety Council or other recognized organizations. For applicants to tidal and ocean water areas, certification must include a minimum of 21 hours of first aid training not including CPR training. Applicants may be required to possess current and valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification including adult, child and infant CPR as well as obstructed airway training issued by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council o r other recognized organizations. Applicants may be required to possess a valid and current certification in water safety instruction issued by either the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the United States Lifesaving Association, the South Jersey Chief's Association or other recognized organizations. Applicants may be required to possess valid and current certification as a trained pool operator issued by the National Recreation and Park Association, the National Swimming Pool Foundation, the YMCA or other recognized organizations. Applicants may be required to possess valid and current certification as a lifeguard instructor issued by the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the YMCA, the United States Lifesaving Association, the South Jersey Chief's Association or other recognized organizations. Appointees may be required to possess current and valid AED (automatic External defibrillator) certification. Appointees may be required to have training in supplemental oxygen support for adults, children, and infants. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
