Where this title is used

Senior Bridge Operator is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under direction, takes the lead in operating an electrical, gasoline or steam powered drawbridge; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Takes the lead in operating an electrical, gasoline, or steam- powered drawbridge.
  • Takes the lead in operating and closing drawbridges upon receiving proper signals from river traffic.
  • Observes river and road traffic; directs the operation traffic gates and other precautionary devices used to warn and guide traffic while the bridge is in operation.
  • Services the drawbridge equipment and machinery.
  • Cleans, checks and inspects the drawbridge engine, control, machine and operator's rooms.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Operators steam boiler and steam engine.
  • Take the lead over other operator(s) and Bridge Attendants.
  • Maintains records of test lifts made with regular, emergency, and auxiliary motors, and other needed information.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year experience involving the operation of a drawbridge.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of procedures used to operate an electrically or gasoline powered drawbridge.
  • Knowledge of procedures used to perform minor bridge maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of the precautionary measures taken to provide warnings of bridge operations.
  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to determine whether equipment is working properly.
  • Ability to observe river and road traffic and to utilize precautionary devices.
  • Ability to understand the significance of the various gauges.
  • Ability to take the lead over operator(s) and bridge attendants.
  • Ability to maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
