Definition
Under direction, performs a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of fire equipment and performs the more complex maintenance and repair tasks involved in masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, plumbing, steamfitting, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, mechanical, or other types of maintenance work, and may take the lead in a small maintenance unit; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Repairs and rebuilds fire nozzles.
- Repairs and replaces parts on ladders, air masks, fire extinguishers, handlights, fire axes, pike poles, ridge poles, air cylinders, and other fire equipment.
- Replaces couplings on soft suction hoses.
- Erects forms, mixes cement and aggregates, pours, and does finishing work involved in concrete structures.
- Patches and repairs brick and concrete structures.
- Repairs plastered walls and ceilings.
- Spackles, repairs, and installs locks and fixtures.
- Repairs and constructs wooden structures
- Paints interior and exterior metal, wood, and masonry surfaces.
- Repairs plumbing stoppages and leaks in copper, iron, and other pipe.
- Replaces washers and gaskets, and makes general service repairs.
- Does general sheetmetal work involved in repairing roofs, drainboards, and rainspouts.
- Replaces lightbulbs, fuses, wall plates, fixture cords, and switches.
- Replaces broken glass and reputties.
- Changes lubricants, refuels, and does light maintenance work on equipment and vehicles,.
- Cleans tools and equipment.
- May work from instructions or work orders.
- Inspects completed work and may take the lead over a small maintenance unit.
- Keeps essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in maintenance work involving repair of fire houses and fire equipment.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices and of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to take precautions in performing the work.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies
- Ability to maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
