Definition
Under direction, performs general painting work involved in the surface preparation and application of paints, varnishes, stains and other materials to metal, wooden, masonry and composition surfaces; works with various kinds of brushes, accessory materials, rollers, hardware and equipment common to the painting trade; may take the lead in a small maintenance unit; may be called upon to do other types of general maintenance work; does other related work.
Examples of work
- Erects and uses scaffolding which may include "A" ladders, window jacks, ladder jacks, simple aluminum or metal prefabricated scaffolding or simple wooden scaffolding.
- May work from swing stage already set in place.
- Adds a single colorant to a white base to match a color.
- Uses brushes and rollers to apply paint to metal, wooden, masonry and composition surfaces.
- Paints and primes interiors and exteriors.
- Reputty sashes and makes minor repairs prior to painting.
- Prepares the surface and applies enamels, oil, stains, water based paints, lacquers, shellac and other types of paints, varnishes and stains.
- Uses thinners, solvents and dries.
- Uses primers, sealers, paint removers, spackling compounds and other materials.
- Cleans and cares for tools, brushes and other types of equipment.
- Work from instructions or work orders.
- Inspects completed work.
- May take over a small maintenance unit.
- Maintains simple records.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/ or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in painting work involving a variety of maintenance.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices and occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in performing general painting and other repair work.
- Ability to maintain records and files.
- Ability to understand, and remember and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to differentiate between various colors and hues.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ability to take the lead over assigned employees.
- Ability to maintain simple records.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
