Senior Maintenance Repairer, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning is a local service title. Definition

Under direction, performs a variety of the more complex tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of refrigerating equipment used in a refrigerating plant and/or in conditioning air and cooling water in buildings; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Installs and assembles condensers, compressors, motors, and other units of refrigerating equipment.
  • Assembles and connects various pipes and ducts used in piping brine and conditioning air.
  • Overhauls and repairs pumps, compressors, piping, and other equipment used in refrigerating and air conditioning systems.
  • Cleans and lubricates equipment.
  • Replaces needed parts.
  • May work from instruction or work orders.
  • Inspects completed work.
  • May take the lead over a small maintenance unit.
  • Keep essential records and files.
  • May fire and maintain low pressure boilers.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in work involving the maintenance and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

License

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification of the appropriate level, commensurate with the type of equipment serviced, issued under the authority of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Fireman's Low Pressure License (also referred to as a Back Seal Operator's License - Low Pressure) issued by the NJ Department of Labor.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in a refrigeration and air conditioning operation and in general maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance involved for a low pressure boiler room operation.
  • Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
  • Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work.
  • Ability to obtain, take care of, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
