Definition
Under direction, welds metal components to fabricate or repair materials using brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment and/or takes the lead over a small group of employees engaged in welding and other types of building repair and maintenance work; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Performs the more complex electrical and acetylene welding, burning and cutting of metals in the maintenance and repair of equipment of cast iron, aluminum, brass, silver, solder and other materials, steel or wrought iron structures.
- Cleans tools and equipment.
- Works from instructions or work orders.
- Maintains simple records.
- Inspects completed work.
- May take the lead over a small maintenance and repair unit.
- Performs the more difficult maintenance and repair work.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in welding work involving a variety of installation and/or maintenance tasks.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in welding and general maintenance work.
- Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to take safety precautions in performing the work.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute and properly use needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to take the lead over assigned employees.
- Ability to maintain simple records.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
