Definition
Under direction, performs necessary social service work for admission, daily care and discharge of children at a Children's Shelter; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Provides counseling for children and coordinates activities with supervisors and staff. Compiles case records and evaluations on each child. Maintains statistical records. Prepares correspondence. Works closely with private, public and other social agencies and departments regarding programs for the children. Interviews members of the child's immediate family and other relations in order to obtain significant social, economic and other information. Prepares social histories for diagnostic, counseling or rehabilitation purposes. Gives testimony in court when necessary. Under direction, maintains needed records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the purposes, policies, standards and procedures involved in doing social work involving the health, physical welfare and social adjustment of children who are socially, mentally and/or physically challenged. Knowledge of the problems encountered in collecting and analyzing factual information that is needed in evaluating individual cases in order to draw sound and social conclusions from and to base appropriate actions to be taken. Knowledge of social case work methods and terminology. Knowledge of the organization, objectives and activities of varied types of public and private social agencies. Knowledge of individual and group behavior. Knowledge of individual and community health problems and of the establishment and maintenance of casework and other records and files. Ability to analyze laws, rules, regulations and procedures and apply them with reasonable consistency to individual cases. Ability to organize assigned social work and develop effective work methods. Ability to work harmoniously with associates, families, children and social organizations. Ability to collect and make correct appraisals of the factual information and social relationships of children and their families. Ability to learn quickly the significant facts in an individual or family situation and to weigh and evaluate such facts. Ability to plan and execute programs for social readjustment of children on the basis of those findings. Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports and to maintain needed records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Five (5) years of professional experience in social work involving childcare. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a master's degree in social work from an accredited college or university. "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
