Definition
Under direction, performs general steamfitting work involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of high pressure steam pipes and fittings, pumps, boilers and furnaces, steam heating auxiliary equipment and steam operated equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the steamfitting trade; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with the plumbing code or accepted trade practices; may provide instructions to those assigned as helpers; does other related work.
Examples of work
- Installs, repairs and/or maintains oil, water and high pressure steam pipes and facilities.
- Installs, repairs and maintains furnaces and boilers, steamtables, autoclaves and similar equipment.
- Troubleshoots malfunctions and performs emergency and routine repairs.
- Works with wrought iron and other types of pipe and fittings.
- Installs steamtraps, dirt stainers, globe valves, thermostatically controlled valves, reducers and other types of valves and fittings.
- Joins pipe with flanged, screwed or welded joints.
- Installs, services, and repairs pumps.
- Covers piping and fittings with insulation or other compositions.
- Installs and maintains mains, risers, headers, radiators, and appropriate auxiliary equipment for a heating system.
- Measures and fits piping and facilities.
- Interprets data from Stationary Fireman's or Engineer's log.
- Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, and specifications and roughing in sheets in accordance with the plumbing code or approved trade practices.
- Interprets graphic symbols used on piping drawings.
- Estimates time and materials needed to complete work.
- Tests and inspects work in process.
- Provides instructions to helpers.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in steamfitting work involving a variety of layout, installations and maintenance tasks.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the methods used in the installation, maintenance and repair of steamfitting fixtures, fittings and machinery.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the steamfitting trade.
- Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of the trade.
- Ability to work from sketches, plans and blueprints.
- Ability to observe safety precautions in performing the work.
- Ability to interpret and apply information from the Stationary Fireman's or Engineer's log.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ability to provide instructions to helpers.
- Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
