Definition

Under direction, supervises the purchase, utilization, and maintenance of vehicles; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Organizes, assigns, and inspects the operation of a transportation system.
  • Assign duties to employees.
  • Responsible for the proper repair, maintenance, and storage of motor vehicles.
  • Arranges for the transportation of passengers and materials for the agency.
  • Assigns vehicles to authorized personnel.
  • Sets up specifications and purchase orders for equipment for approval by superiors.
  • Attends meetings.
  • Establishes transportation schedules.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Five (5) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the problems involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a large fleet of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the problems involved in the dispatching of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the most efficient methods of purchasing, requisitioning, and storing of automotive equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge of the motor vehicle laws of the State of New Jersey.
  • Ability to analyze vehicle operation and management problems.
  • Ability to organize assigned work.
  • Ability to develop procedures for determining the need for repairs to motor vehicles.
  • Ability to give assignments and instructions to individuals and provide them with advice and assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise.
  • Ability to check employee's work to see that proper procedures are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are observed, and that desired objectives are achieved.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with associates.
  • Ability to see that equipment is serviced promptly.
  • Ability to keep alert to modern practices in garage operations.
  • Ability to provide for the economical disposition of parts and supplies.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
