TAX ASSESSOR
The assessor sets the taxable value of every property in the municipality. That valuation, not the assessor, decides what share of the local tax levy each owner carries, which is why the office is deliberately insulated from the governing body that spends the money.
New Jersey requires a Certified Tax Assessor certificate from the Division of Taxation, and assessors hold four-year terms of office with tenure available after successive reappointments. Certification and that statutory term take the place of a Commission examination.

Tax Assessor is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.
