Definition
Under direction at the A. Harry Moore School, Jersey City State College, Department of Higher Education, assists professional staff by caring for handicapped children and performing sub-professional duties; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Assists a professional nurse, teacher or therapist by caring for handicapped children and performing assigned sub-professional duties. Ability to talks with children, parents and/or relative to obtain needed personal, financial and medical information. Ability to takes weights, heights, and temperature; records these; files children's charts. Ability to serves meals to children and, when it is required, feeds children who are unable to feed themselves. Assists in assembling needed equipment and materials and sees that these are properly stored when not in use. Observes the general health of children and reports any unusual conditions to a nurse, physician or other staff supervisor. Assists a professional nurse, therapist or teacher in routine duties. Assists in keeping supply cabinets neat, presentable and well stocked. Assists in wheeling children to and from bathrooms; bathes and generally assists handicapped children; dresses and undresses children at the beginning and end of day. Ability to supervises children during rest period; carries children when so required. Accompanies handicapped children on field trips, including overnight trips. Assists with the arrival of children at the school and with their departure at the end of the school day. Ability to Prepares factual records. Ability to Maintain essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Requirements
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the problems likely to arise in talking with people in order to obtain needed personal, medical and financial information. Knowledge of the problems which arise and the methods used in caring for handicapped children. Ability to talk with people, obtain and record personal, financial, and medical information. Ability to care for handicapped children and assist professional nurses, therapists, physicians and teachers in these duties. Ability to maintain emotional stability in the face of disabling illness. Ability to understand children and their problems. Ability to prepare factual reports. Ability to keep simple records. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
