Definition
Under supervision, conducts simple, routine traffic surveys, analyzes the data from such surveys, and recommends appropriate action; does related work as required..
Examples of work
- Makes traffic surveys, working alone or as one of a group, to determine volume, speed, and traffic behavior patterns at designated locations, and gathers mass transportation information.
- Takes measurements with manual traffic counting, speed recording, and other equipment used in making surveys in connection with speed zoning, through streets, parking, and so forth.
- Compiles and summarizes survey data, and prepares graphs and charts of traffic conditions and traffic flow.
- Supervises the work of clerk enumerators.
- Analyzes traffic accident reports, compiles summary information relative to the reports, and prepares collision diagrams.
- Gathers pertinent information in conjunction with traffic engineering staff for reports on traffic problems and on installation of new or improved traffic control devices.
- Prepares written reports on surveys, investigations, and conferences with appropriate proposals for the improvement of traffic safety and traffic movement.
- Operates office copying equipment to reproduce reports and drawings.
- Maintains essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in field investigation which shall have included gathering of significant data and compiling data into meaningful reports.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations of New Jersey relating to traffic regulations.
- Knowledge of procedures used in making simple traffic investigations, surveys, and studies including studies of speed, driver behavior, parking, and other related studies.
- Knowledge of statistical theory, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to analyze, comprehend, interpret, and apply basic traffic control and regulation laws.
- Ability to understand the varied devices and methods used in traffic engineering surveys.
- Ability to make field surveys of speed, parking practices, driver behavior, and related traffic investigations.
- Ability to operate office copying equipment.
- Ability to make statistical analyses and presentations of factual data.
- Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative statistical and other reports.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
