TRANSFORMER AND ELECTROMOBILE EQUIPMENT MAINTAINER

Definition

Under direction, performs varied routine inspection, servicing, testing, and repairs to high voltage, electrical distribution transformers and mobile utility equipment working with various tools common to the trade; performs varied mechanical work involved in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment containing hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems, working with various mechanical and hand tools common to the trade; operates electric utility vehicles including articulated vehicles; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• In the shop and field does inspection, testing, servicing, and repairs to motor vehicles and utility construction equipment including the tune ups, replacement of emergency flasher components, hydraulic systems parts, engine and body repairs including welding and spray painting for corrosion control, servicing brake systems, and maintaining electrical system including electronic ignitions and control systems.
• Performs the work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of hydraulic, electric and mechanic systems in motor vehicles and utility construction equipment.
• Performs the work in maintaining and repairing electric utility equipment such as aerial lift trucks, digger-derricks, wire puller/tensioners and pole trailers.
• Maintains, repairs, and tests high voltage distribution transformers in the field and in the shop for voltages up to and including 15 KV or the highest voltage utilized by the electric utility, including repair or replacement of component parts.
• Reassembles transformers, replace gaskets and defective parts and reconnecting for three-phase operation.
• Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials and supplies.
• Operates electric utility vehicles including articulated vehicles during the course of fleet inspection, maintenance and repair.
• Drains and prepares oil-filled electric equipment for disposal or salvage.
• Repairs or stops leaks on oil-filled electrical equipment and transformers.
• Inspects, tests, repairs insulated aerial bucket trucks utilized by electric utility crews performing live line work on 15,000 volt class electrical circuits.
• Maintains di-electric integrity of the equipment.
• Completes maintenance reports and records.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Education

Successful completion of a two (2) year training course in automotive technology from an accredited community college or vocational school.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical distribution systems.

License

Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey

Appointees may also be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of automotive tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of the techniques utilized in the operation of computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Knowledge of automotive preventative maintenance techniques.
• Knowledge of the techniques used in the repair of motorized vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of the varied types of high voltage distribution transformers and of the tools and equipment used to maintain them.
• Ability to use the tools and equipment used to diagnose causes of transformer malfunction and corrective action to be taken.
• Ability to analyze transformer problems and to perform the work in the garage and in the field on varied types of transformers.
• Ability to install component parts in transformers and reassemble and test same.
• Ability to tear down, assemble, and test motor vehicles of varied types, and to maintain them in good working condition.
• Ability to prepare maintenance reports and records.
• Ability to analyze and solve mechanical and hydraulic problems.
• Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to do mechanical work in the garage and in the field.
• Ability to obtain, store, record, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials and supplies.
• Ability to use and learn the proper care and adjustment of the more common tools used in the trade.
• Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions and to learn quickly from instructions and from demonstrations.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
