Definition

Under direction, supervises and assists in the organization and execution of varied and complex electrical tasks related to metering, relaying, switchgear, and general electrical maintenance and construction; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Supervises the testing, installation, and maintenance of meters, instruments, and related electrical facilities.
  • Supervises the maintenance and testing of safety and protective equipment such as rubber gloves, sleeves, and line hoses.
  • Supervise the maintenance of signal and control systems.
  • Supervises and performs investigations and analyses pertaining to customer service.
  • Supervises and assists in the installation and maintenance of lighting and power systems for utility buildings and facilities of city divisions.
  • Plans work schedules for assigned personnel.
  • Expedites material procurement and delivery.
  • Coordinates activities of assigned personnel with other departments, contractors, and other utilities.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Requirements

TRAINING

Satisfactory completion of a training program in electrical power plant operations.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of motors, motor controllers, meters, cable, conduit, and transformers.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of procedures used in installing, repairing, and maintaining motors, motor controllers, meters, cable, conduit, transformers, and electrical appliances.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions to be taken in working with electrical equipment and high voltage.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures of keeping simple records.
  • Knowledge of advanced arithematic and trigonometric concepts.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with customers and others.
  • Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, use, and repair needed equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to prepare clear, sound, and accurate informative and legible reports.
  • Ability to perform advanced mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, common fractions, ratios, proportions, and roots.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
