Definition

Under direction, during an assigned tour of duty, supervises a squad of investigators in conducting internal investigations of criminal and other matters relating to the operations of a penal institution; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Supervises and works with a squad of investigators who are engaged in the internal investigation of criminal complaints relative to the operation of a penal institution.
  • Gives suitable assignments and instructions to assigned investigators and reviews their work to see that work is performed in accordance with established polices, regulations, and procedures.
  • Maintains records of investigations, assignments, dispositions and progress of cases, and reports all activities to superior officers.
  • Confers with superior officers and other on trial date, postponements, dismissals, etc.
  • Coordinates and correlates the activities of the squad with that of other squads in the division.
  • Directs assigned personnel to make further investigations when necessary.
  • Assists in the investigational activities of personnel in other law enforcement agencies.
  • Advises municipal, county, state, and federal agencies on policy and rules of the penal institution.
  • Prepares accurate and informative reports.
  • Establishes and maintains suitable records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three years of experience as a detective or criminal investigator with a recognized law enforcement agency.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

<b>SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:</b>

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the law, regulations, standards, policies, techniques, and procedures used in conducting criminal investigations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the proper methods and procedures for gathering and preserving evidence and in preparing legal proof for trial purposes.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods likely to be effective in dealing with varied types of persons and of behavior of people.
  • Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory principles and techniques.
  • Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions to assigned investigators and review their work.
  • Ability to supervise and perform the work involved in conducting investigations of criminal and other matters and to obtain the information needed from a legal viewpoint for trial purposes.
  • Ability to understand the complexities and uses of pertinent rules and laws.
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions and among the dangers involved in dealing with violent and armed persons.
  • Ability to learn quickly from demonstrations, observation, and oral and written explanations.
  • Ability to take and maintain a firm and correct stand when controversial matters arise.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
