Definition
Under direction, in a facility that processes sludge, operates, adjusts, regulates and maintains chlorinators and other chemical machinery, flowmeters and other mechanical equipment designed to provide potable, water; takes periodic readings of varied gauges and records these readings; maintains and repairs mains, valves, pumps and other sludge plant equipment; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Operates and regulates alum and lime feeders, chemical feed machines, chlorinators, purification machines, water pumps, meters, indicators, filters, flowmeters, deep well water pumps and other mechanical equipment of the sludge plant.
- Performs routine bacteriological and chemical analyses of water to determine purity and potability, PH, turbidity and other periodic qualitative and quantitative tests as may be necessary to satisfy federal, state and local health laws and standards.
- Takes periodic readings of meters, gauges, flowmeters and other recording apparatus.
- Replaces water valves and other sludge plant parts and equipment; yarns, pours and caulks joints; oils and greases sludge plant equipment; obtains, safeguards and properly uses needed equipment, tools, materials and supplies.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience involving the operation and maintenance of electric pumps, motors and other equipment and machinery of the type utilized in a sludge plant.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems, procedures and methods used in developing a suitable work program and working procedures involved in operating and maintaining a sludge plant.
- Knowledge of the methods used in operating, adjusting, regulating, maintaining and making minor and emergency repairs and adjustments to alum and lime feeders, chemical feed machines and chlorinators, purification machines, water pumps, meters, indicators, filters, flowmeters and other mechanical equipment included in the sludge plant.
- Knowledge of the methods used in making periodic standard daily qualitative and quantitative chemical water tests to meet federal, state and local health laws.
- Knowledge of the problems involved in taking accurate readings of flowmenters, pressure gauges, meter indicators and other recording devices.
- Knowledge of the proper procedures used in making routine and complex repairs to water mains, pipes and appurtenances.
- Knowledge of the varied types of tools used in the maintenance and repair of water installations and of the proper use of such tools.
- Ability to analyze sludge plant operation and maintenance problems.
- Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to operate, adjust, regulate, maintain and make minor and emergency repairs and adjustments to alum and lime feeders and chemical feed machines and chlorinators, purification machines, water pumps, indicators, filters, flowmeters and other mechanical equipment included in the deep well pumps and the sludge plant.
- Ability to take accurate readings of flowmeters, pressure gauges, meter indicators and other recording devices.
- Ability to obtain, store and safeguard needed equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to work for long periods in emergency situations and to remain on the job until all repairs have been made.
- Ability to operate an air compressor and other specialized tools and equipment.
- Ability to maintain needed records and files; ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations; ability to work harmoniously with others.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
