Art Therapist is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direction of a physician, plans and conducts art therapy programs to aid mentally ill and physically disabled patients in their recovery or adjustment; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Confers with members of medical team to determine nature of patient illness.
- Recommends art therapy program for patients taking into consideration the emotional and physical condition and abilities of patients.
- Devises program and instructs patients in art techniques.
- Encourages and guides patient participation.
- Appraises patient's art projections and recovery progress.
- Maintains records of individual cases and submits periodic progress reports to the referring physician and other members of the treatment team.
- Participates in professional and related meetings.
- Maintains and repairs art materials and equipment.
- Establishes and maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units
Education
Possession of a master's degree in Art Therapy or related field with at least twenty-one (21) semester hours of credit in art therapy from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by sixty (60) hours of supervised clinical training in art therapy.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of and familiarity with approved art therapy principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Knowledge of sculpture, painting, and other fine arts.
- Ability to plan, organize, and carry out individual and group programs of art therapy.
- Ability to motivate, communicate, and work effectively with physically and psychologically handicapped persons.
- Ability to evaluate degree to which art therapy programs are meeting their objectives.
- Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with professional and sub-professional professional personnel.
- Ability to prepare progress notes on patients.
- Ability to sculpture and paint.
- Ability to maintain records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
