Definition

Under direction, plans, coordinates, directs and administers the operation of one or more therapeutic programs; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Develops and implements policies and procedures for therapeutic activities in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and key therapeutic personnel to meet therapeutic services objectives.
• Coordinates program efforts with other internal activities such as in-service training, internship programs, volunteer programs, and administrative and therapeutic activities.
• Evaluates program effectiveness; recommends and implements changes, and advises staff thereon.
• Examines operational needs, and makes staffing and other recommendations to facilitate efficient operations.
• Estimates budgeting costs to facilitate financial planning.
• Secures services from other hospital units such as housekeeping, and maintenance, to fulfill needs of therapeutic services provided by the hospital.
• Evaluates scope of therapeutic activities to ensure adequate professional and support staff availability.
• Manages the work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
• Gives talks and presentations to the general public; acts as agency liaison to the general public.
• Directs the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
• Prepares and supervises the preparation of necessary correspondence and reports.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in social work or in art therapy, music therapy, dance therapy, recreation therapy, psychodrama, or a related therapeutic profession, including or supplemented by a practicum in social work or any of the therapeutic professions.

Experience

Six (6) years of experience performing patient evaluations, formulating, modifying and implementing treatment plans, as a social worker or as a therapist in any of the therapeutic professions such as art, music, dance, psychodrama, recreation, three (3) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of and familiarity with accepted social work and/or therapeutic practices and techniques.
• Knowledge of the use of specialized modalities to maintain physical and/or mental health or to achieve physical and/or mental rehabilitation of patients.
• Ability to analyze and apply data.
• Ability to measure specific therapeutic activities and overall therapeutic services against rehabilitative goals and objectives.
• Ability to develop procedures to address identified issues in program functioning.
• Ability to assign, evaluate and supervise the work performance of professional and support staff.
• Ability to confer with staff, other medical professionals and interested persons on matters relating to budgeting, standards, therapeutic techniques, etc..
• Ability to work harmoniously with subordinates, associates, and superior officials.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to prepare and supervise the preparation of necessary correspondence and reports.
• Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
