Definition
Under direction, plans and coordinates activities in order to inform the public of the substance abuse prevention services available through the agency's program and is responsible for developing fund raising activities and community support for the agency and its programs; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Plans and coordinates activities designed to provide information to the public in the area of substance abuse as well as on the prevention services available through the Drug Rehabilitation Program. Acts as a resource person in the area of substance abuse for other agencies, organizations and the public in general. Reviews the literature in the area of substance abuse in order to identify funding sources and alternatives for education and prevention strategies in the substance abuse area. Plans, develops and implements activities for the purpose of eliciting interest, support and cooperation of agencies, institutions and the general public in the area of substance abuse. Provides information on the purpose, services and activities available and offered by the agency. Identifies need for substance abuse information in geographic area and participates in the planning, preparation, distribution and evaluation of educational material. Develops and makes use of audio visual aid materials and equipment in order to provide information on substance abuse. Works with other staff members in the development of educational, prevention and fund raising activities and is accountable for monies raised in fund raising activities. Plans, organizes and implements an effective program to elicit community support for the agency and the prevention of substance abuse. Makes presentations to other agencies, groups and the public in general on the services offered by the agency in the area of substance abuse. Plans, participates and leads workshops, conferences, seminars and other activities to increase the awareness and participation of agencies, organizations and the public in the area of substance abuse. Conducts research, extracts data, prepares official documentation consisting of letters, memorandums, reports, proposals and other materials in the area of substance abuse.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of substance abuse, the problems involved and the programs and other options available to deal with them. Knowledge of the principles and most effective methods of disseminating information. Of developing community support and cooperation. Knowledge of analyzing and evaluating community drug abuse informational needs and resources. Ability to communicate effectively in a written and verbal format. To prepare reports and other documentation. To plan and coordinate activities. Ability to plan, organize and develop a community informational program relating to drug abuse. Ability to develop effective work methods. Ability to assess community substance abuse informational needs and resources. Ability to work effectively with various groups and organizations. Ability to communicate ideas and knowledge effectively. Ability to analyze and interpret drug abuse data. Ability to prepare clear, concise and informative reports, and to establish and maintain records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Five (5) years of professional experience in the field of drug abuse detection, prevention or control. OR Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
