Where this title is used

Municipal Surveyor is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under direction, supervises and/or performs work involved in preparing maps, charts, and technical data indicating changes in land parcels and subdivision of properties; conducts field surveys to establish boundary lines of properties; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Conducts field surveys, using notes, maps, title deeds and other records to check for accuracy.
  • Calculates information needed to conduct surveys from notes, maps, deeds or other records.
  • Prepares descriptions of municipally owned property.
  • Supervises the preparation of apportionment records indicating layout of plots.
  • Reviews/certifies completed work to satisfy legal requirements.
  • Determines tax apportionment for subdivided property.
  • Determines precise location of property from legal documents.
  • Prepares property maps, plots field notes, prepares maps, charts and technical data for municipal agencies.
  • Answers inquires of a technical natures requiring knowledge of land surveying procedures and principles.
  • Provides assignments and guidance to personnel.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Coordinates findings with work of engineering, architectural, and other concerned personnel.
  • Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of land surveying experience.

License

Possession of a land surveyors license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the problems and procedures used in land surveying.
  • Knowledge of conducting engineering calculations.
  • Knowledge of the proper function of field survey parties and the importance of accurate field notes.
  • Ability to prepare, analyze, develop and interpret maps, charts and drawings.
  • Ability to use and interpret aerial photographs.
  • Ability to abstract land titles through the use of municipal records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and others.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
