Assistant Engineer Bridges is a local service title. Definition

Under direction, performs routine field and office engineering work involved in the design, maintenance, and construction of bridges and culverts; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Prepares contract drawings of basic of bridge structures.
  • Assists in the design of more complex bridge structures including the layout and detail, and works from verbal instructions or sketches.
  • Performs the required geometric calculations for detail layouts.
  • Computes the quantities of contract items needed for specific bridge construction work.
  • Checks shop drawings and contractor's working drawings for completeness and accuracy.
  • May assist in field inspection of existing bridges and other structures for drainage or needed repair.
  • May direct the field survey crew and review their field notes.
  • Prepares detailed drawings of existing and proposed structures based on own field notes and that of survey crew.
  • Prepares inspection reports.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Conducts routine tests to determine load distribution, stress and strength of materials used in the construction and repair of bridges.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in structural design and/or structural engineering.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences.
  • Knowledge of principles of civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used to prepare contract drawings of bridge and other structures using computations and sketches, including layout and detail.
  • Knowledge of techniques for making pencil and ink tracing and complete contract drawings.
  • Ability to apply fundamental bridge engineering concepts, theories, and practices.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate data in the solution of bridge engineering problems.
  • Ability to analyze problems involved in preparing contract drawings of entire bridge and other structures from basic computations and sketches.
  • Ability to prepare and trace complete drawings, and to review contract, shop, and contractor's working drawings.
  • Ability to compute and provide estimates of contract items required for bridge and other structural construction projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with associates.
  • Ability to maintain records and files.
  • Ability to inspect existing bridges and structures.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
