Definition
Under direction, paints surfaces of automotive equipment, such as automobiles, buses, vans, and trucks using brushes and/or spray gun; does other related work as required.
Examples of work
- Removes old paint from vehicle, using liquid paint remover and scraper.
- Smoothes surfaces with sandpaper and steel wool.
- Roughens aluminum surfaces with acid solution and steel wool to insure that paint adheres to surfaces.
- Sprays scratched surfaces with filler solution, using spray gun.
- Applies paper and masking tape to protect unpainted surfaces, such as bumpers, windows, and chrome trim.
- Removes gloss from intermediate coats of paint, using wet sandpaper, to insure adherence of next coat.
- Sprays and paints surfaces with materials such as paint, enamel, or lacquer; uses spray gun and paint brushes.
- Position stencils on vehicle surface, according to blueprints, using ruler and pencil.
- Paints insignia and identifying letters and numerals on vehicles.
- May remove and replace accessories from motor vehicles, such as chrome moldings, trim, mirrors and windshield wipers prior to painting vehicles.
- May paint designs with brush.
- May touch-up paint, or paint identifying stripes or other symbols on motor vehicles.
- Polishes final coat of paint, using polishing compound and cloth.
- Paints surfaces not readily accessible, such as wheels and underside of fenders, using brush and spray gun.
- May brush or spray undercoating material on replaced parts.
- Works from instructions and specifications in accordance with approved trade practices.
- Prepares time and materials estimates.
- Gives suitable assignments to helpers.
- Keeps records.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in painting the surfaces of automotive equipment such as automobiles, trucks, buses and vans.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of standard automotive surface preparation and painting methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of the proper methods for applying coating materials to metallic surfaces.
- Knowledge of the techniques of applying materials so that surfaces meet texture, decorative, thickness, and level requirements.
- Knowledge of the methods and types of materials used to build-up, shape and level surfaces prior to applying coating materials.
- Knowledge of the methods for the care and cleaning of painting tools and paint spraying equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions to be exercised.
- Knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, and materials used to paint automotive equipment.
- Ability to sand, wire brush, scrape, and otherwise remove paint, lacquer or other coating from surface of automotive vehicles.
- Ability to brush on and spray coating materials to metallic surfaces.
- Ability to use various automotive painting tools and equipment.
- Ability to mix uses and applies various coating materials, solvents, and pre-coating agents to metallic surfaces.
- Ability to differentiate between various colors and hues.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ability to give suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers.
- Ability to keep records.
- Ability to take proper safety precautions in performing the work.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
