Where this title is used

Range Master is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under direction has charge of a firearms range at a police school; supervises range instructors in training and qualifying trainees in the proficient use of firearms and other weapons; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Tests, supervises, and assigns firearms instructors to instruct trainees in the safe and proficient use of firearms.
  • Schedules trainees for training in the use of weapons including revolvers and other handguns, shotguns, rifles, machine guns, automatic weapons, and use of tear gas.
  • May program and operate a computer automated range system.
  • Orders equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Complies with all rules and regulations of the Police Training Commission with respect to firearms training and firearms instructor qualifications.
  • Maintains records and files of all trainees using the range.
  • Scores trainees and maintaining records and files on their qualifications.
  • Is responsible for the safety of all personnel on the firing range and for ensuring that proper safety precautions taken.
  • Inspects firearms for proper function and accuracy.
  • Conducts tests of firearms using a variety of testing equipment.
  • Ensures the proper/safe storage of firearms and equipment.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in the training and qualification of law enforcement officers in the safe and proficient use of various firearms.

CERTIFICATE

Possession of a valid certificate as a Range Master issued by the New Jersey Police Training Commission.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the various types of firearms and their advantages/limitations.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions to be taken in the use of firearms.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to care for and maintain firearms.
  • Knowledge of testing for proficiency in the use of firearms and other weapons.
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations promulgated by the New Jersey Police Training commission governing the training of law enforcement officers in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to instruct enrollees in the safe/proficient use of firearms.
  • Ability to prepare and put into effect work schedules.
  • Ability to provide assignments and advice to firearms instructors.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with associates.
  • Ability to program and operate a computerized firing range where available.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
