Definition

Under direction, makes inspections of repair of bridges and other related construction work to ensure compliance of material standards and workmanship; may perform bridge repair tasks; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Inspects the repair of bridges to ensure that standards for materials and workmanship are met.
• Reports progress of building projects.
• Checks accuracy of plans and specifications before approval for contractors.
• May lay out electrical rewiring of gatehouses and bridge navigation lights.
• Diagnoses movable bridge mechanical difficulties, recommending repair methods and assisting in repairs where necessary.
• May assist in designing bridge alternations or improvements.
• Discusses projects and material needs with contractors and suppliers.
• Maintains records and files.
• Prepares reports.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Inspects the construction of roads to ensure that standards for materials and workmanship are met.
• Reports on the progress of construction projects.
• Ensures that specifications for earthwork, cuts, fills, slopes, ditches, rock excavations, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, catch basins, manholes, concrete headwalls, concrete curbs, fine grading, construction of concrete, bituminous macadam, gravel and bituminous concrete pavements, spreading and rolling of stone, shoulders, and guard rails, and erection and placement of signs are complied with and that only permissible variations within allowable tolerances occur.
• Inspects materials before use and obtains laboratory approval prohibiting use of materials found to be substandard.
• Takes samples of materials needed in the laboratory to determine size, weight and grading of stone and sand used in concrete work for pavements, and samples of other materials as required.
• By means of a straight edge and by visual inspection, sees that a good riding surface is obtained.
• Ensures that tools, machinery, and trucks are so used as to avoid accidents.
• Keeps records of the loads of distributing trucks reporting gallonage, square yards penetrated or treated, rate per gallon, temperature, and source of materials.
• Prepares estimates of amounts of monies to be paid contractors monthly.
• Maintains records of labor, materials, and equipment used.
• Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures followed and materials used conform to specifications.
• Discusses deviations from specified construction procedures, plans, and specifications with contractor or construction supervisor to ensure compliance with regulations and approved plans.
• Helps to coordinate snow removal work.
• Prepares daily reports indicating status of the work in relation to plans and specifications.
• Prepares reports.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in the inspection of bridges to detect damage, need for repair, and to ensure conformance to safety regulations, and/or the inspection of bridge construction or repair work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and standards of workmanship, and/or in the construction, repair, and maintenance of bridges.

One (1) year of experience in road construction and maintenance work.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
