Definition

Under direction performs varied complex work involved in the operation, installation, adjustment, regulation, testing and calibration, repairs, and rebuilding of sewage flow meters; performs related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Organizes assigned work and assists in developing effective work methods.
• As a team leader, works on removing and replacing sewage flow meters using pipe wrenches and other hand tools.
• Tests accuracy of meters using calibrated testing equipment and calibrates meters on a regular basis.
• Applies appropriate safety procedures and established security procedures guidelines.
• Takes the lead in doing maintenance checks, and determining whether components need replacement or repair.
• Demonstrates proper work methods as instructed by supervisor.
• Disassembles malfunctioning meters, locates and replaces defective parts such as pointers, gear assemblies and disk assemblies.
• Removes rust and scale from internal components using solvent.
• Tests sewage flow through meters to determine accuracy of operation.
• Takes readings and records them on the forms as a basis for measuring flow of sewage.
• Maintains essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in the assembly or calibration or in the installation repair and maintenance of any measurement device.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the mechanical components and their function in sewage flow meters.
• Knowledge of the steps to be taken in the disassembly, replacement, adjustment of sewage meter parts and components.
• Knowledge of the methods used in testing the accuracy of meters.
• Knowledge of accuracy standards used in calibrating meters.
• Knowledge of the solvents or methods used to remove dirt or corrosion both inside and outside the meter.
• Knowledge of sewage meter reading and recording procedures.
• Knowledge of the workings of a Parshall flume, Kennison nozzle, and Venturi tube.
• Ability to understand and follow all safety guidelines.
• Ability to work with large tools such as pipe wrenches.
• Ability to disassemble items and perform visual examinations to detect worn parts such as gears and registers.
• Ability to perform standard repairs and function checkout of mechanical components and assemblies of equipment used in measuring flow.
• Ability to remove dirt and corrosion with appropriate solvents or methods taking proper precautions to avoid injury to oneself.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
